Virgil or “Vergil” depending on the language was a very famous and inspirational poet living in the Roman Empire during the time of Cesar Augustus; his work has been incredibly influential but none more than Aeneid. As Vergilius sat right next to Dante, their legs touching each other. He starts guiding Dante onto his lap towards him, holding them by their waist. As Dante gets closer to Vergilius, he stops them for a moment to just start touching their shirt. Dante felt Vergilius’ scarred hand touching their back, they felt they could burst any moment.
However, Dante’s complex and extensive reception of the Aen. had little effect on the wider mediation or perceptions of the poem until the later 19th century when Dante’s renewed popularity in Italy and elsewhere reinforced the importance of V. and his epic for modern readers.
